Generation Erasmus wird erwachsen

Vor 12 Jahren bin ich als Austauschstudentin von St. Petersburg nach Dortmund gekommen. Was für Glückspilze wir Generation Erasmus nur sind! Für meine Eltern, die ihre Ausbildung in der Sowjetunion gemacht haben, war ein Austauschsemester im Westen genauso vorstellbar wie ein Studienaufenthalt auf dem Mars heutzutage für uns.

Ganz Europa auf einem Campus

Uni Dortmund, Oktober 2006

Der erste Schock war mein Zimmer im Studentenwohnheim. Der Raum war total sauber, die wenigen Möbelstücke neu, die Wände blitzeblank. In St. Petersburg hatte ich ein vollgestopftes Zimmer mit drei Studienkommilitoninnen geteilt. Hier war das ganze Zimmer nur für mich alleine! Ich fühlte mich schrecklich einsam. Die sterilen Wände erinnerten mich an ein Krankenhaus.

Plötzlich klopfte es an der Tür. „Hallo! Wir wollen uns gleich die Party im Keller anschauen. Kommst du mit?“ fragten mich ein Mädchen und zwei Jungs vor der Tür. „Ja klar!“ sagte ich ohne zu zögern. Meine neuen Freunde stammen aus Frankreich und Polen. Sie hießen Allison, Jojo und Szymon. Wir klopften an weiteren Türen und lernten Studenten aus der ganzen Welt kennen.

Mit der Zeit wurde unsere Clique immer größer. Dazu gehörten Menschen aus verschiedenen Ländern: Frankreich, Belgien, Russland, Belarus, Polen, Ungarn, Kamerun, Spanien, Bayern (in Dortmund zählt es ebenso zum Ausland).

Die wichtigsten Sachen über Europa lernte ich nicht in den Seminarräumen, sondern schnappte  auf Parties, Festen und bei den gemeinsamen Ausflügen auf. Wie praktisch, dass man mit der Bahn am Wochenende zu fünft durch ganz Deutschland günstig reisen kann. Die Fahrt von Dortmund nach Hamburg mit den Regionalbahnen dauert dann zwar 8 Stunden, dafür kostet sie nur 5 Euro. Und wenn man mit dem Nachtzug nach Paris fährt, spart man eine Übernachtung im Hotel. „Free hugs“ in Amsterdam und der Strand in den Haag waren nur ein paar Autostunden entfernt! Was für die meisten aus unserer Clique selbstverständlich war, war für mich ein Wunder. Von Land zu Land in der EU zu reisen war einfacher als von Stadt zu Stadt in Russland!

Generation Erasmus bekommt Kinder

Irgendwann war mein Austauschsemester vorbei. Doch das war kein Ende, sondern ein Anfang – von vielen Freundschafts- und auch Liebesgeschichten. Dank Erasmus tanzte ich auf den Hochzeiten in Frankreich, Polen, Belarus und Österreich.

Wir sind immer noch verbunden. Auch wenn die Kommunikation jetzt meistens über eine WhatsApp-Gruppe funktioniert. Mal herrscht monatelang Funkstille, mal gibt es tagelang eine rege Diskussion. Zum Beispiel über das Thema Kinderbetreuung. Denn die Meinungen darüber, wann man (frau) nach der Geburt am besten wieder in den Beruf einsteigt, sind in Frankreich, Deutschland und den USA sehr unterschiedlich.

Wir machen immer noch die Nächte durch – nicht mehr wegen Parties, sondern wegen unserer Kinder. Tja, wir sind erwachsen geworden. Wir sind in der ganzen Welt verstreut, treffen uns im Internet, unsere Kinder sprechen mehrere Sprachen. Wir übernehmen die Verantwortung, arbeiten viel, reisen gerne. Ich bin glücklich darüber, dass ich in vielen Städten Europas an der Tür eines Hauses klopfen kann und ein Freund oder Freundin aus der Erasmus-Zeit sie aufmachen wird.
